Eastward propagating surface salinity anomalies in the tropical North Atlantic

چکیده
Upper ocean variations across the tropical Atlantic are strongly seasonal due to corresponding seasonality in surface forcing and continental runoff. This implies that many features regional upper state or transport anomalies may also be seasonally locked. In boreal summer autumn, remote sensing sea salinity (SSS) observations show presence of eastward propagating concurrent with development fresh Amazon plume acceleration North Equatorial Countercurrent. Interannual these cross-Atlantic SSS signals investigated connection their by wind circulation patterns. Satellite data advected zonally entire Atlantic. It is suggested they originate wind-induced changes areal extent, which notorious Brazil Current retroflection. instrumental for exploring such because in-situ do not always capture them limitation resolved spatial temporal scales.

The Influence of Atlantic Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies on the North Atlantic Oscillation
The influence of Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies on the atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic sector during winter is investigated by performing experiments with an atmospheric general circulation model (GCM). These consist of a 30-year run with observed SST anomalies for the period 1961–90 confined geographically to the Atlantic Ocean, and of a control run with clima...
متن کاملAnticorrelated multidecadal variations between surface and subsurface tropical North Atlantic
[1] In this paper for the first time I show that themultidecadal variations of observed tropical North Atlantic (TNA) sea surface temperature (SST) are strongly anticorrelated with those of the observedTNA subsurface ocean temperature, with long-term trends removed. I further show that the anticorrelated change between the TNA surface and subsurface temperature is a distinctive signature of the...
متن کاملA curious local surface salinity maximum in the northwestern tropical Atlantic
[1] Sea surface salinity (SSS) measurements from the Aquarius/SAC-D satellite reveal the seasonal development of a local salinity maximum in the northwestern tropical Atlantic in boreal winter to early spring. This seasonal tropical SSS maximum, which is confirmed by comparison to in situ observations, is centered at 8 N, and is up to 0.5 psu saltier than the surrounding water despite its locat...
متن کاملNo inter-gyre pathway for sea-surface temperature anomalies in the North Atlantic.
Recent Lagrangian analyses of surface drifters have questioned the existence of a surface current connecting the Gulf Stream (GS) to the subpolar gyre (SPG) and have cast doubt on the mechanism underlying an apparent pathway for sea-surface temperature (SST) anomalies between the two regions. Here we use modelled Lagrangian trajectories to determine the fate of surface GS water and satellite SS...
